Calculate the projection for your colonies
We do not ask for any personal data to run the calculation. The colony figures you enter are only sent when you press “Calculate” (or download the PDF) to api.meowmetrics.com, the MeowMetrics server, which performs the calculation. Like any server, it keeps an access log for security with the IP address, the date and the path of the request (not the calculation figures), for up to 30 days. To prevent abuse we use Cloudflare Turnstile, an anti-bot service that loads when you start using the calculator. More information in the Privacy policy.
Projection result
A projection, not a prediction: it shows what can be expected from the data entered, with a likely range. It is not an official plan.
These projections, including the “without TNR” one, assume that the people who care for the colonies keep doing so. The population is maintained largely thanks to their work: without it, the situation would be different and is not reflected here.
Please note
| Year | With TNR (central) | Likely range | Without TNR (central) | Sterilized (%) | Colonies at 80% | Births avoided | Sterilizations (females / males) | Spending |

Download the PDF report
A two-page report with your data, the chart and the year-by-year table. We would also love to show you the full version of Meow Metrics: if you like, leave us your details and we will contact you for a demo. If not, download it anyway.
The PDF is not adapted for screen readers: the same information is in the table on this page.
Leave us your details and we will write to show you the full version. The PDF downloads when you send the form.
The calculator is not available right now. In the meantime, you can download the free cat colony spreadsheet or ask us for a demo.

How it works
The calculator projects how many cats there will be at the end of each year in two scenarios: with the sterilization effort you choose and without TNR. For the TNR scenario it gives a central estimate and a likely range. It also calculates the recommended effort to reach 80% per colony, when all colonies reach it in the typical case, the births avoided and, if you enter the costs per female and per male, the spending.
It is a projection, not a prediction: it shows what can be expected from the data entered, not what will happen. It is not an official plan and does not replace the judgement of the program’s technical and veterinary team.
The model is based on published studies of colonies managed with TNR. The sources are cited by name in the PDF report; the model’s parameters are not published.
The people who care for the colonies
These projections, including the “without TNR” one, assume that the people who care for the colonies keep doing so: feeding, veterinary care and adoptions. The population is maintained largely thanks to their work; without it, the situation would be different and is not reflected here.
Who it is for
- Local governments: to size a municipal TNR program and its budget. See Meow Metrics for local governments.
- Associations: to plan sterilization campaigns with the local government. See Meow Metrics for associations.
- Colony caregivers: to understand what effort their colony needs. See the free account.
Free spreadsheet to keep your colony census
A free spreadsheet without macros to record colonies, cats and interventions. The summary is calculated automatically: per colony, cats alive, sterilized and percentage, with a traffic light when 80% is reached; and for the municipality, totals, colonies at 80%, spending per year and average cost per female and per male. It includes an example. It does not make projections: it only counts what you record.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator predict how many cats there will be?
No. It is a projection: it shows what can be expected from the data you enter, with a likely range and a central estimate. It is not a prediction or an official plan.
What does the projection assume about the people who care for the colonies?
That they keep doing so. The projections, including the “without TNR” one, assume that the current care of the colonies continues. Without that work, the situation would be different and is not reflected in the calculator.
What does reaching 80% per colony mean?
It is the calculator’s reference goal: at least 80% of the cats in each colony sterilized. The recommended effort is the one needed to reach it within the years chosen; “light” and “moderate” are part of that effort.
Do I have to sign up or give my details?
No. Calculating is free and needs no sign-up. For the PDF you can leave your details if you would like us to contact you for a demo, or download it without giving any details.
What is sent when I press “Calculate”?
Only the colony data you enter: number of cats and colonies, percentages, effort, years and, if you add them, the costs. We do not ask for any personal data to calculate. To prevent abuse, the calculator uses Cloudflare Turnstile, an anti-robot service that loads when you start using it. For security, the server keeps an access log for up to 30 days with the IP address, the date and the path of the request, without the calculation figures.
Terms of use
This calculator provides a projection, not a prediction: it shows what can be expected from the figures entered, with a likely range and a central estimate, not what will happen. The result depends on the quality of those figures and on general assumptions that may not match the situation of each colony or municipality, so its accuracy is not guaranteed.
The projections, including the “without TNR” one, assume that the people who care for the colonies keep doing so. The population is largely sustained by their work: without it, the situation would be different and is not reflected here.
The result is for guidance only. It is not an official plan and does not replace the judgement of the programme’s technical and veterinary team or professional advice. Animalia Consulting S.L. accepts no liability for decisions based solely on it.
